His heart's in his art BY NICK SOON 4/08/2009 10:35:00 AM
HAVING already made his mark within the local art community, Kings Langley's Jason Wing is preparing to take on Melbourne. He is now preparing for his first solo art exhibition in Victoria, which will be staged at Arc One Gallery on August 25.
Mr Wing, 32, will exhibit 15 pieces. He has risen to local prominence by winning the Blacktown City Art Competition's Local Artist Prize in 2006 and Indigenous Artist Prize in 2008. Mr Wing describes himself as a ``street scene artist'', specialising in stencil art, and says he has gone from strength to strength after his two wins. He has had many other successes, too, since those two wins. This year he collaborated with Aboriginal artist Vernon Ah Kee on a mural project for Sydney's Object Gallery. Some of his works were also prominently featured in the Blacktown Arts Centre's Black(s)town exhibition. Mr Wing was also chosen to create a sculpture of Jesus for the Jesus Walks exhibition, which was shown at the Sydney Museum of Contemporary Art to coincide with last year's World Youth Week in Sydney. Together with Woodcroft artist Michael Skordis, who won the Youth Art Prize in 2008, Mr Wing will take part in the 2009 Blacktown City Art Exhibition. He said that he was working on ideas for this year's submission. ``I have something in mind and will start working on it as soon as I have completed the works for my solo exhibition,'' Mr Wing said. It will be the fourth time he has entered for the Blacktown exhibition. ``It doesn't matter if I win or not,'' Mr Wing said. ``It would be a bonus if I do as the competition attracts artists from all over NSW.'' The exhibition is open to all Australian artists and offers a total prize pool (including acquisitive funds) of $24,000. The competition's sections are: painting, watercolour, works on paper, sculpture and a special children and young artists category.
Entries close at 4.30pm on August 18 for judging and selected works will be exhibited from September 19 to October 17.
